Its called an 88 spcl because it is a no frills engion. It does not have the amenties like the 90 or 115hp have. Outboard Jack didnt go into specifics.

Re: 1996 Evinrude 88 SPL increase in HP. Likely both engines have the 13:26 gear ratio. Both engines will have similar initial power, but the 115 will walk away from the 88 at higher rpm's. If the motor cranks when you jump it there are a couple of things that it could be, a bad 20 amp fuse, starter solenoid, ignition switch, safety neutral switch, or bad wiring.
