In case anyone didn't know, the mining spots around town are close enough to automate mining (and strength training) into in-house storage. Also by default the Hub isn't owned by you which PREVENTS RAIDS regardless of how much you actually invest into the town. It is the ideal starter base for those very reasons. The Hub is a great place to start, but it's not a great place to stay. As you mentioned already, it has a lot of things working against it--but I suspect that's intended.
